The INNO-TPHA is a passive hemagglutination test in which preserved avian erythrocytes coated with antigens of T. pallidium (Nichols strain) bind specific antibodies present in patient sera and/or EDTA plasma. Positive reactions are characterized by hemagglutination. The cells are suspended in diluent containing components to eliminate nonspecific reactions. The test has been shown to be sensitive and specific for the pathogen and can be performed easily because of its simple procedure carried out in microtiter plates.
